The organization I’m working with on this internship is called My New Red Shoes. Their mission is to provide students in low-income and underserved communities with shoes and clothes to make them eager for school. By doing so, they aspire to improve the self esteem, confidence, attendance and inclusion in school. Founded in 2006, My New Red Shoes has served more than 65,000 students in need of shoes.
The work that My New Red Shoes successfully accomplishes is important to our community because it improves the childrens’ educational experiences in school and outside. For many, shoes provide a status symbol for the student. For example, if you have the ‘cool’ shoes as a kid, you are expected to be more popular than others and more welcomed in the community. However, if you don’t, you’re portrayed as poor and feel excluded. With the proper shoes, it can enhance the quality of life in school for the children, making them more excited to go to school everyday.
This is important to me because I aspire to make a positive difference in the community. I want to make an impact in the community to make up for all the negative things that are everyday occurrences right now (global warming, attacks, etc). I would love to use my passions in life (playing soccer, writing short stories and traveling the world) to my advantage to help the community. I truly believe in the saying one person can make a difference.
